Dymocks digital ebooks
Dymocks has a few formats for ebooks, I focused on the PDF for Adobe Digital editions and ePub for Adobe Digital editions. I found through the internet there apparently over 85 ereading devices that read these formats. It is difficult to choose an eReading device for the booklovers club promotion, a more indepth amount of research needs to be done to select an easy to use and reliable device....
my choice of publisher
I decided to go with Alto Books Pty Ltd.Alto Books is a recently formed independant publisher of mass market books. They publish orignal works from new Australian writers and illustrators and exclusive international co-editions published under the alto books imprint. They also provide a full range of publishing services to anyone seekng to self publish. This was based on my further research with D...
Results from the questionnaire
Based on the research from the questionaire,
only 1 in 10 people were aware of any of the current issues in the Australian Book Industry, and when I explained some of these issues they were not really concerned about the impact that these issues have on the Australian economy and employment. Many people were not concerned about the closure of bookshops and were more than happy to purchase their...
Target Audience
The target audience for Dymocks is not specific. Their customer base ranges from 5 - 100, basically anyone who loves to buy books for themselves or others.
Vanity publishing
My research has led me to another side of publishing, vanity publishing or self publishing. This is where the author pays for the editing, printing, marketing and distribution of the finished product. They want these authors to believe that these businesses are making a considerable effort to market the authors book, but in reality they have no real interest in the success of your book. Their...
Publishing options
I researched more about D Publishing and found that it had been viewed as vanity publishing and this may not be a good promotion for my brief. Therefore I am now looking at other reputable Australian Publishers. The first thing I noticed is that each publisher had their own specialty of books they published. It was important to me that they be Australian owned and operated businesses. Some of the...
Writing competitions and publishing
I have been researching writing competitions, not being a writer I know very little about them. Majority of them offered monetary prizes, while some of the more well known ones offered mentoring from well known authors and to be published. I like the idea of offering the winner a publishing prize. On researching Dymocks I found that they have their own publishing source called D Publishing. This...
Questionnaire
I have decided to do a questionnaire to get some views from people on ebooks, ereaders and the writing competition. Some of the questions will be….
Are you aware of the current issues in the Australian book industry?
Are you a member of a bookclub from a bookshop, as in do you have a loyalty card that gives you special benefits?
Do you buy books online? if yes, from where?
Do you have an...
Dymocks D Publishing
I found a lot of bad reviews on D Publishing with it being referred to as Vanity publishing. I am really rethinking my initial choice of publisher for the promotion. The issues lay apparently with the contract, it is apparently written very badly. Not knowing a lot about publishing I have to assume that writers would be aware of this and may not be interested in a writing competition that...

Refined brief
I have further refined my brief. It has been difficult to work out how to incorporate a writing competition that brings in memberships for booklovers, but I think I have finally worked out how to do this.
Here is the new brief….
Client
Dymocks is an Australian based company that has been established since 1979 . They have been successfully franchising for over 30 years. With over 96...

What connections do people have to the book retail industry?
There are a large portion of people who still enjoy going into a bookshop either to buy something in particular or just browsing to buy something they like the look of. I’ve spoken to a number of people who all say they really like sitting on the couch or bed reading a book, flicking through the pages. People love collecting...
Who is this designed for?
This brief is aimed at consumers, young and old, parents.
Who are the people / groups directly involved with...
Consumers, Publishing houses, Distributors, other bookshops, online bookshops, Authors, internet
Understanding the challenge
The challenge here is to convince Australians why it is better to buy books from Australian online Bookshops and the actual bookshops. Another part of this challenge is helping people to understand why it is important to save the Australian book industry in relation to retailers and the impact overseas sales is having here.
Why would people need/want to engage with this issue? My first thought is...
Mood Board for the Retail sector of the Australian...
This week our group with briefs that have retailers as their client got together and put a mood board together of concepts and ideas around retail in the Australian Book Industry.
Some of the things we thought were special about the retail area are
customer service - recomendations / good and bad reviews of books
the joy of browsing through a bookshop
the bargain boxes you get at bookshops
...
Starting a plan for my Saving the Australian Book...
This is just a start and my initial thoughts for the brief I have developed.
Make a Plan
Week 9 –
1. Investigate the issues in the Australian book industry in relation to bookshops and the possibility of losing them.
2. Refine brief further after more research
Week 10 –
1- Research what the current campaigns are for the Australian book industry and how successful they have been....

Saving the Australian Book Industry Brief
Below is a draft brief of how I propose to save the Australian Book Industry
Client : Retailers
Objective: To highlight the benefits of the local bookshop. Save the Australian bookshop. Lets not become like american cities where you can’t find a bookshop.
Solution: Create a sense of community through the internet - facebook / website etc....

So many issues for designers to think about...
So I’m looking into ethics and sustainability for the non-designers guide. The hard part for me was narrowing down the number of issues to talk about and what I felt was important. I felt that the understanding of piracy with fonts and images was something that would be good for people to know. I thought this because clients don’t really understand the licensing and usage issues and...
Your rights in the workplace
This week we focused on our rights in the workplace. We were all given different scenarios to work with. As a group we had a particular issue in the workplace that we needed to role play in front of the group.
Our scenario was that there is an Art Director in a boutique studio with a team of three designers. The Art Director considers them all friends as well as colleagues as they often go for...
A 'Free Pitch' simulation
This week to really enforce what it is like to be in a free pitch situation we did a role play / simulation of a free pitch for an existing business. In this case it was for Country Road. So we were split into our usual groups and ranged from small to large Design studios. We had two hours to come up with our pitch and present it to our ‘client’ - Country Road.
THE BRIEF

Free Pitching
WHAT IS FREE PITCHING?
Free Pitching (also know as Spec Work) is when you produce design solutions for clients that are unpaid. According to the DIA (Design Institute of Australia): “Free pitching may be initiated by a customer who requests the provision of free services, or it may be initiated by a designer who provides free services in the hopes of later payment. Free pitching is condemned by...

More thoughts on the Non Designers guide
Having to actually put in a clear and concise way the jobs that graphic designers do is harder than you think. We do such a wide range of jobs, how do I simplify that without doing someones head in?
I have researched around to find the most common jobs that Graphic Designers do and have come up with
they make print material, do logos and branding, they can make websites, they can design...
Comparing 'eco-friendly' packaging processes to...
Individually we were to create an A3 poster within an hour using mainly symbols, the main thing was no photographs. The A3 poster is to show a comparison between eco-friendly and standard packaging processes.
Reference: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2010/10/greenguide.shtm - Green Guides Summary of Proposal
According to the FTC to be eco-friendly material needs to be-
Recyclable
Made with Renewable...
Packaging Manufacturers in Australia
As a group we researched various packaging manufacturers in Australia. We were looking at how each of these companies utilised eco-friendly design and sustainability practices. My particular focus was on JayPak Cartons The companies we looked at are as follows.
JayPak Cartons
JayPak Cartons is a 100% Australian, family owned and run business based in Malaga WA with over 100 years combined...
What do Graphic Designers do?
I’m creating my ‘Graphic Designers guide for non-graphic designers. I thought to start with I’d just list all the things off the top of my head that we graphic designers know about and do. We make alot of things!
Books, posters, brochures, logos, branding, signage, wine labels, car stickers, packaging, tshirts, cds, hats, the list goes on…..
The question is how do you...

A Case of Copyright and Trade Mark Law
This week we worked in groups to study cases affected by infringement of copyright and infringement law.
Mitre 10 released brochures.
Benchmark Building Supplies (trading as Bunnings) distributed these with stickers displaying ‘Bunningprices’.
Mitre 10 sued for Copyright and Trade Mark infringement.
Injunction on distribution ordered.
Benchmark appealed and won.
Under the New Zealand Trade...
A session on IP from IP Australia
What is IP? - IP = Intellectual Property -‘When you apply your mind to creating a new and distinctive product, you are also creating IP.’
It is a key consideration as a consultant, designer, inventor or representative of a commercial company.
We had a very interesting session from staff from IP Australia. Something I was not aware of was the database that holds all copyrights and...
I'm back!
I started this blog 2 years ago for a uni assignment and haven’t been here since I have my own sites. But here I am again. This time I’ll be looking at ethics and sustainability in Graphic Design. I hope you enjoy following my journey through this semester. :)

Global Corporate Challenge - 10000 steps a day!
Don’t follow me, I’m lost too
GCC hurts!
GCC is really hurting my legs. Just went for a walk with my dog and daughter and decided to go a little bit further but it added an extra 40 minutes on making that a 1 and half hour walk. Not only do my calves hurt from the WII step exercises now they hurt all over…. I’m at 10000 steps thanks to this walk and still the rest of the day to go.
GCC - 10000 steps a day for 125 days!
you may have heard of the GCC - it’s the Global Corporate Challenge. Getting our public servant butts moving…. :) (not just for public servants though) We do spend a lot of time sitting behind a desk so this is a good incentive to get moving.
I have to say spending all my time working on uni assignments at home does nothing to contribute to the 10000 steps. I’ve been on the wii...
